I received a Leibster Award! Read the fun questions and answers!
I was nominated for a Liebster Award!
Being inspired by fellow travel bloggers is an absolute joy for me. It's what sparked the travel blog fire under my butt. So, when I was nominated for a Liebster Award by the awesome Hobo in High Heels (a blog I really like), I was super excited! Thanks, Heidi! And, Heidi was nominated by Hello Guanster! Fun!
Children of the 80's: Remember Slam-Books?
What is the Liebster Award? It's a peer-nominated blogging award that helps highlight and showcase blogs and thrives on a pay-it-forward system. If someone thought you were cool enough to nominate you (yay, you!), then you answer the questions and pass along the fun by creating new questions and finding new bloggers to nominate. So, it's a win-win for everyone! Wording Well has gathered some of the many versions of the rules. She also says that Liebster is actually a German word that means the dearest, sweetest, kindest, nicest... How awesome is that! I now love this word.
Now, get ready to learn a lot more about me that you didn't want to know!
1. What does a normal day in your life look like?
A normal day in my ultra fascinating life is this: roll out of bed sometime before noon (unless, of course, I'm pet sitting dogs that want to go out earlier), check email, drink lots of coffee, cook food or go out for my favorite thing in the world - brunch. Work a bit online. Take a walk, wander around and explore. Stop for dinner. Maybe watch a movie. And, probably some more work online. Hey, I warned you I was fascinating.
2. What is your coolest travel story?
In 20+ years of travel, and with quite an adventure streak, I definitely have some stories. One summer (way early in my travels), I briefly flew home to the US after a while in Europe and sleepily re-packed my bag for a trip to South Africa the next day. Soon after arriving in South Africa (during their winter), I slowly and sadly realized that I'd packed all summer clothes as I saw snowflakes trickling down outside. I was there a while so I had to buy winter clothes. The moral of the story is that I stimulated the South African economy. Also: pay attention to hemispheres. My 'coolest' travel story. Heh.
3. What are three things on your bucket list?
I go back and forth between keeping a bucket list and not keeping one. On one hand, I feel like having one is too much pressure, but on the other hand, it feels darn good to check things off lists. That being said, three bucket listers that come to mind are: seeing the glaciers in Alaska (while we can), going hiking in the Himalayas, and visiting Antarctica.
4. What is your least favorite travel destination?
This may be weird, but I'm not the biggest fan of California. Just as a whole. I love the redwoods in the North and Napa is beautiful, but the rest of it- I just don't enjoy being in for super long periods of time. So crowded and driving is a total nightmare. But now I feel bad for saying that, so here's a pretty picture of the redwoods!
5. What place have you always dreamed of visiting?
Definitely Iceland. Probably why I watch The Secret Life of Walter Mitty so much. (That, and the soundtrack.) *Update: went, loved it!*
6. What is your ultimate guilty pleasure?
I feel like my life is made up of guilty pleasures. I seriously lack impulse control. Force me to pick and I'll say it's a tossup between a really well-made vanilla soy latte, a nice dry red wine, and a vegan reuben sandwich. Unless I can have all 3. That'd be great, thanks.
7. What is one of your most embarrassing moments?
Oh man. My life is a series of embarrassing moments. I'm surprised when a day goes by that I haven't embarrassed myself in some sort of disaster. But the most embarrassing? Oh, the classic I-think-a-bee-is-trying-to-attack-me dance done in public, where nobody else can see the bee, so then I'm just some crazy American girl who started flipping out and yelling for no apparent reason. What can I say, I'm smooth.
8. What is your favorite thing about traveling?
Definitely the freedom of not being tied down. Every day is different, each location is different, you meet new people, and there are endless hopeful possibilities around every corner. So, my answer- it makes me hopeful!
9. What is the best thing anyone has said about your blog?
I've been very surprised to receive such nice compliments about my blog. (Thanks!) The best things so far have been about informing and inspiring others to travel, which rocks! (check out travel tips and pet sit tips).
10. Tell me about one of the best meals you’ve ever had!
Ooh. I love to eat. Like, really. So, I'm pretty happy with most meals. My favorite cuisines are Thai and Ethiopian. But there is something to be said for home cooking. One of my best meals has been a delicious vegan platter of Kenyan cuisine- lentils, vegetables, exquisite spices, and the yummy chapati bread. Also an honorable mention- I had a killer vegan frito pie in Portland, Oregon. (But really everything there is delicious.)
11. What makes you happy?
Well, doing what I love and being free, of course. And, kittens!
