The Beauty, History and Vegan Food of Enkhuizen

The Beauty, History and Vegan Food of Enkhuizen, Netherlands

Welcome to the charming old Dutch harbor town of Enkhuizen.

As one of the largest marinas in the Holland, Enkhuizen rose to fame in the 17th century for international trade with the Dutch East Indies Trade Company.

amazing history

The town's history actually dates all the way back to the 14th century, and beautiful and stunning period architecture is seen all over the city. The uniquely shaped town gate, the Drommedaris, dates all the way back to 1570 and the architecture of the church to 1470.

beautiful architecture

History lesson aside, the town itself is absolutely beautiful. Green, peaceful, lovely Holland. I just love it here. Adorable traditional lanes of brick houses split up by canals and fairytale-like white wooden bridges. And a charming town full of shops and restaurants.

Stroll down the popular main street Westerstraat for great people watching, shopping galore and amazing architecture to marvel at.

local produce

This beautiful natural area is lush, green and fecant. Full of parks, trees, plants, and flowers. Check out the local produce shops stocked with fresh local fruits and vegetables. Don't miss the special Holland white asparagus! A must try for foodies.

spruit market

Continue down Westerstraat to find the best shop in town! The large, well-stocked, health food shop Spruit has a variety of health-conscious foods, local organic produce, and cruelty-free home and beauty care products. Also fresh bakery breads and loose teas!

Spruit has all the standard goodies like alternative milks, butter, yogurt, ice cream, and meats. And even some super rare vegan finds like vegan whipped cream, gummy bears, pate, bacon, and mayo (I found 5 different kinds)! I could live here. So much cool stuff!

honkies sushi

Hungry? Then it's time for vegan sushi. With vegan mayo! Yum, Yum, Yum.

A popular local sushi joint, Honkies, serves up several different kinds of vegan sushi with fresh veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and avocado. Also pad thai dishes, ramen, glass noodles, seaweed salad, vegetable spring rolls, and edamame.

They have a bunch of vegetarian options on the menu that the very friendly chef is happy to veganize. Eat in the cozy shop or order online and get sushi delivery via motorbike! How cool is that?!
